There is no question about the reprehensible nature of L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterlings recorded words, which provide an exclamation point for a lifetime of alleged and actual racist statements and actions. In my opinion, there is also no question that the NBA is acting appropriately in accordance with their constitution and bylaws, to which all owners agreed to submit their authority and, as a private entity, they are entitled to act to preserve the income and reputation of the organization. I admit it is perhaps disingenuous for the NBA to act now when Mr. Sterling is known to have held and acted on his racist views for decades. Players, coaches, and staff continued to sign contracts with his organization and accept his money, and the owners were content to let things ride since he wasnt a liability to their franchises. Its obvious that only the imminent threat of dropped sponsorships and player boycotts compelled them to act as quickly as they did. With all of that said, the issue of privacy protection should take center stage. I guarantee that none of us would be immune the slings and arrows of public wrath if some of our private statements were made public. This is truly a situation where there are no heroes or noble causes to be lifted up.
