"...There is one more aspect to this process that is absolutely invaluable, and that is the development of a unique voice on your instrument. After spending years listening, practicing, and developing our craft, why is it that many musicians can execute things flawlessly, but they sound like everybody else? Simple. They never learned to trust their own concept of phrases and passages and develop them. These days everyone has a ton of chops, licks and technique. But what everyone doesn’t have is a unique voice. By experimenting with longer phrases, passages, different groupings, pairings of odd styles or things that are unique to our individual personality, we can often arrive at our own voice on an instrument just by being ourselves. We then are free from randomly assembling licks or chops into something that isn’t necessarily coherent." - Cliff Almond
