There is some REALLY interesting research going on in humans at the moment looking at the effect our gut bacteria have on our overall health. Apparently the average human has over 1 kg of bacteria living in them (a lot huh!) and scientists are just starting to uncover the extent to which they can influence our health. Something I found fascinating though is that the bacteria in our gut can influence whether we are insulin resistant or not, with people eating low fibre diets at higher risk... which begs the question; to what extent does the bacteria in our horses gut affect their insulin sensitivity? And are these high sugar grasses that cause so much grief causing problems at least partly by changing the bacterial populations in the hindgut??
