There is terrible news of a tragic accident near HMT in Srinagar. A public transport vehicle and an army vehicle suffered a collision. I understand five people have died already. I have time and again raised the issue of road safety in J&K. Every day we hear of accidents that lead to death or injury to many. I wish the government showed some urgency in dealing with this pressing public health problem. I also wish people of the state took more interest in this life and death matter. It is strange that people here come out for demonstrations against the Israeli offensive in Gaza but say nothing about daily deaths and injuries that occur on our roads. It is fine to feel a sense of solidarity with people who may be suffering elsewhere but, let us also set our own house in order. If the public takes more interest in road safety, I am sure the government will have little choice but to respond. This is not an issue that requires a lot of money. With existing resources and a willingness to confront this issue, we can significantly reduce the toll these accidents take on individuals, families, and society.
