There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding this. Clubs have to pay performance royalties to a performance rights organisation every year in order to play music. That money is put in a huge pot to be later divided among registered artists. Since clubs dont submit DJ set lists, most of the smaller artists dont get their fair cut of this money. Most of the money is received by bigger artists as the performance royalty organizations assume that the more popular an artists is, the more club plays he/she gets. Which of course isnt necessarily true.
