There was a distant Underhill cousin who was more notorious than any criminal outlaw in the 1930s. He robbed more banks than John Dillinger ever did and was considerably more dangerous than Baby Face Nelson. He escaped prison twice after receiving two life terms. He was the leader of a criminal gang that included two older brothers and close friends, and was called the Tri-State Terror for his bank-robbing spree and gangster tactics (in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma primarily, but went as far as Arkansas and Kentucky). FBI Director Edgar Hoover considered him to be the most dangerous fugitive at the time and sent agents to help several state polices to capture him alive or dead. He was the first outlaw to be declared killed by the FBI during a massive shootout in late December 1933, a month after having just married his high school sweetheart. He fled on foot and ran about several blocks bloody and bullet-ridden, then he collapsed and was captured by a sheriff. He died three days later in a Oklahoma prison. His name was Wilbur Underhill. Cockiness, criminally savvy, toughness, and ruthlessness were his hallmarks.
