There was a great editorial regarding the creation of these lightweight landing craft in the Minneapolis Tribune newspaper on June 6, 2014. It seems that in the 1930s, one Andrew Higgins became involved in designing and manufacturing similar craft for the federal government in their battle to fight rum running in the governments effort to enforce prohibition. Higgins played both ends of that battle. He built fast boats for the feds, then built faster boats for the rum-runners! That meant the feds needed even faster boats, so he accomodated them again! In the process, Higgins developed the boat building skills that allowed him arguably to be the most important contributor of all in the defeat of the Nazis on D Day. Had it not been for American ingenuity and entrepreneurship, we would all be speaking German today!
