There was a heck of a storm here last night. It started with a distinct stillness with lots of lightning flashes in the distance. No thunder. This can be typical here as we are heading into the driest month in Laos. We really get the most amazing light shows here. You dont get a storm without the wind. So sure enough, the wind kicked up hard! We jumped up and out onto the porch to rescue the towels drying on the line stretched across the front while dodging the wildly whipping hammock. The wind was really strong. It knocked open our screen windows and started banging the shutters which made me think of hurricanes. We got everything battened down and went back inside. The bungalow was shaking from the heavy gusts of wind. Flashes of lightning were accompanied by increasingly closer booms of thunder until the fury of the storm was undeniable. It finally calmed a bit when the rains came. We went to bed thinking the storm was over. Lance awoke to the sound of five enormous booms that sounded like cannons being fired in sequence. The storm returned for a little reprise and he drifted back off to sleep. The next day a Lao friend explained the storm was all due to a printing error on the invitations for a memorial service. This caused the party to start on a Tuesday instead of Wednesday as planned. The event should not have been held on a Tuesday as bad things can happen on a Tuesday. The spirits were pissed off and let them know by reeking havoc on the celebration with an enormous storm. Everything in its right time and place! Come back tomorrow and party! I told him about the big booms in sequence to which he responded that they were gun shots into the storm to help chase it off. Thats life in Laos!
