There was a significant rise in net migration into the UK in 2013/14 to 243,000 from 175,000 the year before, government statisticians say. EU citizens accounted for two-thirds of the growth, which included an increase in arrivals from Romania and Bulgaria. Prime Minister David Cameron said his target of reducing net migration below 100,000 could still be achieved. Separate figures showed over 25% of births in England and Wales last year were to mothers themselves born abroad. There was also a rise in the proportion of people in the UK who were born overseas. According to the migration figures from the Office for National Statistics, a total of 560,000 immigrants arrived in the UK over the 12-month period to March, while an estimated 316,000 people left. John Hawksworth, chief economist at PwC, has compared the Conservatives attempts to control migrant flows to King Canute trying to hold back the waves. Mr Hawksworth also suggested that the increase in EU migration helped to explain the relatively low growth in average earnings over the past year, despite strong growth in the number of jobs.
