There was a story this week about a woman who crowdfunded her $362 - TopicsExpress

There was a story this week about a woman who crowdfunded her $362 Uber ride on Halloween and it got me thinking about the overhyped trend of ride sharing services and rising rates for individuals to use public transportation. It feels like people are really into this idea that instead of having a hard time getting a cab, its better for prices to rise so you can pay the up-to-the-minute-market-rate to get where you need to go; its more efficient and more fair. As more people with ample amounts of cash move into SF it is changing how we view the right to and attitudes around transportation; rather than a right we should all possess, it feels like a luxury commodity. Just within my friends, I have a schizm between well-off bearz/tech industry peeps who never ride a bus and drive/Uber everywhere, and a whole crew that depend on public trans, bikes and their feet. While not ill-intentioned I witness the prior group rarely feeling at all connected to communal aspects of transportation; time is money and a quick zoom makes sense. I switched away from car ownership last year, I walk/bike/muni mostly and depend on FlyWheel/ZipCar as a stop-gap likety-split measure. I and many others exist somewhere in the middle (I also like Flywheel because they dont raise rates, but allow you to request cabs in a sane fashion). A private car is much nicer than a stinky newspaper-clothed yeller 3 rows back, but I worry that this prevalent libertarianism leaves us separated from each other, but also MUNI/BART leadership seem to stink like diapers, but also when our city is made up of more and more moneyed folk, that switches how things operate. Anyway this all bubbles more with elections today and how I am writing this at a fancy coffee shop on 24th st on my MacBook as I post pics of the community radio show I was on talking about my startup Yarness business. Just thinking. Just typing. Also FYI I just sit-danced in my chair.
