There was a time in the eighties when Aba was a center of industry, commerce and entrepreneurship. Many young people migrated from many parts of Nigeria to Aba in search of employment, better life and greener pastures. It was the commercial nerve centre of not only the Eastern Nigeria but the entire Nigeria. It had all the features of a city with functional social amenities. It had a significant population of middle class and the Government Reserved Area in Aba was a place to behold. Today, all those features have faded away before our very eyes. All hope on fixing Aba is not lost, thanks to the present administration for the improved security situation in the the state. That in itself is a great achievement as peace and security form a backbone for development, investment and a vibrant economy to thrive. Our state is blessed with great economic potential which underscores the reason why the next governor of the state should be a technocrat who can turn one naira to one billion. We at G-51, submit that one of the ways to turn the economy of the Abia State around and improve security in the state is to unleash enormous economic development potential in Aba. The horrific experience is still fresh in our memory during the reign of Maffians and the latest which is kidnapping. The attendant consequences of this brought the state to its knees, practically shutting down economic activities in the entire state. This is a pointer to how strategic and important Aba is to the Abia project. Research has shown that there is a strong positive correlation between the economic status of a people and security. To sustain the existing peace in the state, Abia state needs a successful business man with impeccable managerial dexterity that will create more economic avenue for even distribution of resources. Many young people roaming around unemployed today could get engaged in one trade or another in the new Aba that Dr Uche Ogah has in stock. Dr Uche Ogah as a perfect, honest and God fearing man has vowed to turn Aba into a construction site. He has given his word that in his 1st 100 days in office; he will bring in the biggest construction company to Abia State. He went as far as promising to resign if he falls short of the expectation of the people. What other assurance do we need from him? We have no doubt that Dr USO as a successful businessman will put the right policy framework in place to prudently deploy the resources of the state for the overall good of Ndi Abia to rejoice which is the Mantra of his government. That is why Abians need to be vigilant about who they will support to succeed the incumbent governor. An opportunity to avoid replicating failure will present itself in the forthcoming 2015 general elections. The kind of visionary development effort needed to move the state to an enviable height can never come from the present political climate where primordial and parochial tendencies seem to have taken center stage. Abians must unite and reject all the retrogressive elements seeking the mandate of Abia people. They should be judged based on record, achievements and contribution to the socio-economic development of the state.
