There was an article in the Brisbane paper today about a 20mth old who got his fingers caught in a pair of tongs that were being used at his day care centre. The comments got me all rifled up and ruffled my feathers. 90% of posters agreed with the mother that real tools and implements have no place in childcare. Posters then going on to say how they were shocked to find real tools (real hammers and real nails being nailed to real wood in a preschool) other people saying how wrong it is for things to be stored in glass jars etc and that the child care centre should be sued. That we shouldnt be creating a homely environment with those things because children arent given access to those things at home. That children need plastic toys etc. We have a long way to come. Apparently I am wrong in allowing my 4-5s access to real eating utensils, allowing them to serve themselves fruit with tongs, allowing them to use real china plates, real objects. Apparently we should provide an empty padded room. This is what parents want. I am saddened that in this day and age parents blame everyone else for things. It was an accident. No amount of supervision could stop a child pinching their fingers in a pair of tongs. Ive had a 4 year old do it right in front of me as she served herself a piece of fruit. Yes it hurt, but has she now learnt how to do it properly so it wont pinch her fingers... hell yes. Am I the only one seeing sense or slightly worried about parents views of cotton wooling children?
