There was an earlier post by Jeffrey Griffiths, I think, about the Thirlmere Aquaduct. From the water treatment works at Lostock, the aquaduct ran down to Walkden. Its total length is 95miles. At the top of Ridyard Street, at the junction with Bridgewater St, the aquaduct split into a North/South Divergance. The North pipe, about 2mtrs Diameter ran into Walkden centre and then ran parallel with the A6, Manchester Rd. Its my opinion that the pipe that runs along the bridge next to Bluebell Woods is part of the aquaduct, though please correct me if Im wrong. This, now discontinued, route, terminated in Prestwich. The South pipe is still in use today and from Ridyard St. heads South towards Worsley. Here, it runs in a roughly parallel route with the Canal towards Manchester. There are no pumps along its 95mile route and works entirely by gravity, the water from Thirlmere travelling at 4-5 MPH. This Victorian marvel is drained and cleaned, section by section, once a year, whereupon, the water supply is maintained by many other sources these days. There are many gates and valve houses within our region and you can see these on a Google Earth Overlay. Ill post a link if anyones interested. :-)
