There was an old villager who had gotten so poor that he decided to sell his donkey, one of the last things of value he owned. He and his son started to a neighboring town leading the donkey to sell him. Along the road, they encountered some old women who severely chastised the father for making his son walk when he could be riding the donkey. He lifted the son upon the animals back and proceeded to market. Farther along the way, they came upon a group of men who scolded the son for riding when his poor father had to walk. The two switched places and continued on the journey. On down the way, they met another group of people who ridiculed them for not making use of the jackass as transportation for both of them. Both then mounted the animal and headed on down the road. A little way further down the road, an animal rights group protested their cruelty to the poor donkey by overloading him. The pair found a pole, tied the animals feet over the pole and carried him. They soon came to bridge, and as they started over the bridge carrying their load, the donkey began to kick and struggle against his bonds. He soon broke free and fell into the river and drowned. MORAL: He who tries to please everyone, pleases no one, and may lose his ass to boot.
