There was nothing special about this evening except the fact the she was looking directly into my eyes from the other side of the road. The traffic light turned red and our auto rikshaw stopped. Subsequently her face lit up, outshining all the other things. Her light skirt flowed out above her knees showing her toned legs. She was a beautiful child. Her hair was the colour of raspberries and was tied in plaits. It was decorated with little beads. Her shoes were not anything a kid would wear. They were slightly-heeled and extremely thin. Her bracelets matched her ivory skin perfectly. She came to me and spoke something in Kannada which I didnt understand. I was so much lost into her eyes. She took out something which looked like a pack of stickers and requested me to buy it. Her gestures indicated that if I dont do so, shell die of starvation. 10 seconds and the signal would turn green. I calculated and recalculated my monthly budget in my mind but the heaviness inside my heart took over my skills of basic arithmetic. I reached out for my wallet and took out a crispy ten rupees note. She took it and gave me the sticker pack carefully. With a smile which showed a little bit of graditute because much of it was covered with poverty and helplessness. She went away. There were several thoughts inside my head. About her, about myself, about the things that surrounded me. Questions which had no clear answers.
