There was once a day in which we were in school learning algebraic - TopicsExpress

There was once a day in which we were in school learning algebraic equations. For some, this may bring up painful memories and the thoughts of what is the purpose of learning this stuff as I will never use it anyway... In my case, I had a great love for it. The whole thought of learning the unknown values and solving the equation was of great triumph and a great sense of accomplishment for me. I would go home and spend hours at night solving equations and even, on one occasion, solved an extra credit problem that the teacher added on the sheet not thinking that anyone could ever have either the time or patience to solve. As the next day arrived and we each took a crack at going to the chalkboard to write our work on the board, the time finally arrived to ask if anyone wanted to take a stab at the extra credit problem. I raised my hand, went to the chalkboard and proceeded to erase all the chalkboards as it took every board available to write this one out. It took the same time and patience to write this out as it did the night before and finally minutes later, I arrived to the conclusion, circled my answer and returned to my seat. The great anticipation then built as the teacher studied all of the work and then in that moment said that is correct. Oh what a great sense of accomplishment that I felt in that moment as others raised their hands in fear asking is that going to appear on our test?... Now you probably wonder why I would retell a story from over 30 years ago on this day. For while it has been a huge moment in my life, I have also been made to realize that our lives too have unknown factors and quantities and we must be willing to have the time and patience to work through the problems we have and discover the answers. While some people want the equations to be simple and easily solved, life just doesnt work that way. In the end, it is important to recognize that x+y= 100%. The answer represents ourselves and the unknown variables are always going to arrive to that same answer. For example, if positive is x, then negative is y. In another case if hate is x, then love is y...From there, you can see that for every x, there is a corresponding y and in the end, the answer will always be the same. The big problem is though that one value usually ends up being larger than the other and with that, the larger value usually rules our lives in that moment. With that said, we must let the larger value be the more positive one for leaving the negative one rule our lives will lead us to shutting out and overlooking the goodness that is in our lives. Again, we must remember that in the end, the answer can only be our life, but we have the ability to move the unknown variables as we wish. Dont let them control you for you have the ability to control them...11/12/14
