There was this little-known planned coup de etat back in 1934 by right-wing American businessmen. The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D Roosevelt, with the help of half-a-million war veterans (the Bonus Army). The plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America, (owners of Heinz, Birds Eye, Goodtea, Maxwell House & Jeb Bu$h’s Grandfather, Prescott) believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini because they feared that Communism would destroy Capitalism. Actually that wasnt their real rationale since they knew damned well that they would become rich beyond their wildest dreams if they could simply get in on the ground floor of this new Corporatocracy which would replace our Constitutionally protected, Representative form of government. Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power. ~ Benito Mussolini. The Italians, who invented the word fascism, also had a more descriptive term for the concept -- estato corporativo: the corporatist state. Unfortunately for Americans, we have come to equate fascism with its symptoms instead of its structure. The structure of fascism is corporatism, or the corporate state. The structure of fascism is the merger or fusion of corporate economic power with governmental power. Failing to understand fascism, as the consolidation of corporate economic and governmental power in the hands of a few, is to completely misunderstand what fascism is. And it is the consolidation of this very power which we are witnessing today. In 1934, Butler came forward and reported to the U.S. Congress that a group of wealthy pro-Fascist industrialists had been plotting to overthrow the government of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a military coup. Even though the McCormack-Dickstein Committee (precursor to the House Un-American Activities Committee) corroborated most of the specifics of his testimony, no further action was taken. In his testimony, Butler claimed that a group of men had approached him as part of a plot to overthrow Roosevelt in a military coup. One of the alleged plotters, Gerald MacGuire, vehemently denied any such plot. In their final report, the Congressional committee supported Butlers allegations of the existence of the plot, but no prosecutions or further investigations followed, and the matter was mostly forgotten. The Republican Party of today has been co-opted by the Oligarchs and they fully intend to finish what their ancestors had begun back in 1933. Its hard to imagine how different American politics was in the 1930s. The collapse of the world economy had shaken the faith of many Americans in individualism and free market capitalism. Many traditionalists, here and in Europe, toyed with the ideas of Fascism and National Socialism; many liberals dallied with Socialism and Communism. Prominent populists such as Huey Long and Father Coughlin sided with progressives in support of isolationism, redistribution of wealth, and a federal government that would play a more active role in the American economy.
