There were Jews in Palestine previous to 1896, when the political movement to establish a Jewish state began. Most of the Jews in Palestine at that time had never left the Middle East. They, along with their ancestors had always lived in the Middle East and had never migrated to Europe. Many of the Indigenous Jews, as well as those who had migrated earlier, were opposed to secular Zionists efforts to establish a Jewish state: The chief rabbi of the Ashkenazi community in Jerusalem, Rabbi Joseph Hayyim Sonnenfeld, often referred to the Zionists as evil men and ruffians and claimed that Hell had entered the Land of Israel with Herzl.[24] Sonnenfeld did not want the Orthodox Jewish community to become subject to secular Zionist authority. I am just educating myself here, and I have added this to the thread on pre-1948 history, but this seems important enough to post separately. In comments is a link that establishes the date for the beginning of political secular Zionism. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haredim_and_Zionism#Concern_in_Palestine
