Fisher is back on full ECMO support today. As we tried to wean him off ECMO overnight, his blood pressure became very low. By morning, they had to put him back on full support. His right lung was very compromised. His chest tube was clogged and they were able to get it to drain. They also performed a bronchoscopy to remove the mucous in his lung. His chest x-ray has improved. The biggest concern facing Fisher tonight is infection. He had a positive culture come back from a mediastinal sample that was collected during a sternal wash out on Oct. 2nd. They assume he is septic (infection in the bloodstream) at this point and that is the reason Fisher has become so unstable over the last 24 hours. This is a very grave risk because Fisher is immunosuppressed to prevent rejection of his heart. They have started a new antibiotic to increase coverage in addition to the others that he was already receiving. Fisher is also experiencing arrhythmias. There have also been significant issues over the weekend with his ECMO pump having air in the circuit. We are uncertain at this time what has caused that, but the team worked very diligently over the course of the day to remedy this. So please pray for protection from mechanical failure. Most importantly, pray fervently for protection from this infection and that Fisher may recover speedily so that we can attempt to wean him off ECMO very soon. Please pray for strength of Fishers new heart and restoration of all vital organs including lungs, kidneys, and liver. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:20). Therefore, I know that God hears this great gathering of believers and have every confidence that He is in our midst tonight. He has made a dwelling place in each of our hearts. He resides within Fisher who has been marked as His own forever. He is faithful in using His instruments, the doctors and nurses and therapists and pharmacists and perfusionists. He is in this very hospital room. He is with our daughter when we cannot be. I am so grateful for His presence and I feel it. I know He is here all the time. My rest is in His presence. Goodnight!
