There will be a filling of a Cornelius Town Commissioners seat at the next Town meeting. The vote is scheduled to be on Monday Dec. 15 at the Town Hall. If you want to have input in who the Commissioners APPOINT to fill the vacant seat, you need to voice your opinion BEFORE 12/15! Attend the Monday meeting AND/OR email [email protected] If you want your vote/voice heard then you need to take an action. This is only one of the reference letters sent in favor of my husband- first runner up in the Cornelius Town Commissioner election: I have been a resident of the Town of Cornelius for over 20 years and this area for nearly 30. I have also had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Michael Miltich for about 10 years. I strongly urge your appointment of Dr. Miltich to the Cornelius Town Board. Dr. Miltich and I both volunteer with a local Boy Scout troop. From the time their sons joined our troop both Dr. Miltich and his wife, Ann, have served as the troop’s “medical officer,” tracking medical health histories for the troop and in some instances providing camp physicals for Scouts who needed them. For the past five years Dr. & Mrs. Miltich have volunteered a week of their vacations to attend summer camp with the troop. They teach first aid merit badge to the first-year Scouts and dispense medications to boys in the troop. They provide first aid for the usual camp cuts and scrapes and, from time to time they have been called upon to treat more serious illnesses and injuries. Having been a Boy Scout volunteer for nearly 20 years, I will tell you that at 2:00 am, trying to get comfortable on a wooden camp bench, caring for someone else’s son and waiting for a parent to arrive to take their sick child home, you learn something about the judgment, decision-making ability, empathy and character of a person. Cornelius needs more leaders with Dr. Miltich’s abilities. Mike solves problems the way he diagnoses illnesses: with an open mind, dispassionately discovering and analyzing the facts then making a decision. With a “treatment plan” in hand, he is steadfast in executing a solution and working toward an ultimate resolution. Individual candidates aside, I also urge you to return us to the time-honored method of appointing the first-runner up in the previous elections to open seats. The proceeding board did the town a disservice by setting a precedent of spending 8 months going through the political machinations of selecting a replacement who supported this faction or that; trying to leverage incumbency for one political advantage or another with the ultimate goal of unduly influencing the next election. Such Machiavellian manipulations leave a bad taste in the mouth of anyone who truly supports democratic government. In a perfect world, I would support a special election to fill open seats so that the peoples’ representatives are selected by the people. But I also understand the cost and drawbacks of an off-off-cycle election. Likewise, neither do I support a hard and fast rule requiring the board to appoint the first runner up. Common sense tells us the board should have the latitude to reject a clearly ill-suited candidate with little support from the voters. But absent a compelling reason, appointing a well-qualified first-runner up is logical and reasonable approach which keeps the will of the voters at the fore. I look forward to attending Monday’s board meeting and supporting your appointment of Dr. Miltich.------R. Monroe This does testimony to Micheals character but Michael also put in large amount of time/work and finance for his last campaign effort and was FIRST RUNNER-UP. He repeated these efforts post election to assist in the state and national election of all GOP candidates. Business-wise he has been elected multiple times to corporation President of a multimillion $ business. He knows finances and business growth issues. Both are important to Cornelius. Michael has been serving this community for many years. Through BSA (helping make leaders for tomorrow ) and providing a healing touch on a one to one serving basis he has contributed to the Cornelius community...Whatever your candidate lean, please make your voice heard. But I suggest Dr. Mike gets the Commissioner seat for which he ran and for which he received votes.
