There will be another vote regarding the Onesto project coming up...the Developer is seeking a TIF , which would result in 75% reduction in property taxes for the next 10 years. Proponents are saying the TIF is needed to encourage development, create jobs and protect the citys investment (we recently loaned the developer $2m to complete the project ). I voiced some concerns in committee about some inconsistencies Ive witnessed. Namely, when negotiating pay for construction workers, the developer insisted the building is residential and therefore he should pay the lower residential wage...however, we dont TIF residential properties, so now it is being presented as commercial. Why is it residential when you pay carpenters, but commercial when you want a tax break? Some on council have stated that the wages of the construction workers are not our business...i feel that when taxpayer money is involved, it is our business. If you live in ward 5, what is your opinion? (i know we have nonresidents in the group, but i would really prefer to limit the discussion to residents of the ward on this one)... For the record, the city gets very little property tax..the vast majority of the money paid or not paid would be Canton City Schools...so if any school officials want to join in, you can be granted a non ward 5 resident waiver!
