“Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven. Matthew 10:32-33 (NASB) Jesus gives us not room for secret discipleship. Anyone who acknowledges Jesus Christ publicly confesses faith in or declares allegiance to Him will be acknowledged by Christ before the Father in heaven. Jesus’ followers would face earthly courts of law where they would have to publicly claim to belong to Jesus Christ, usually at their peril. Genuine discipleship always involves acknowledging Jesus Christ, whether or not we face pressure and persecution. Jesus has demonstrated to us how He wants us to live with personal godliness and with the Holy Spirit guiding us through this life. We are to live with the hope of experiencing the very life of God. Jesus’ life and teaching have given us instruction in how we are to live a godly life. We live this way knowing that godliness never earns access to heaven from Earth. However through godly living we discover the blessing of heaven on earth. We are to live boldly by confessing Jesus Christ before others. I have seen Christians pray for their food in restaurants by nodding their heads and hoping no one sees them. I have also seen Christian avoid the issued by not praying. Then I have seen some pray boisterously to make sure everyone sees them. However, I believe God wants us to pray just like we do at home with everyone bowing their heads and quietly praying so as not to disturb others. We pray in thanks humbly while still leaving a witness for God’s glory not for notoriety.
