Theres a bill coming up in parliament soon that seeks to give the National Intelligence Service powers to listen to our calls, read our messages and even our private emails. The constitution of Kenya guarantees all of us the right to privacy. This bill is therefore equal to introducing an amendment to the constitution with an aim of deleting the right to privacy from the bill of rights. Though the masterminds of this bill are arguing that it will give the intelligence service powers that will enable them to collect intelligence hence detect crime well in advance, I honestly feel that the bill is tailored to manipulate and force Kenyans into submitting to the government of the day. I thus find the bill draconian, dictatorial, backward and unacceptable. It compromises our foundamental freedoms. In all the past incidents of terror, weve always been told that there were intelligence reports but they were not acted upon. So the problem is not lack of intelligence but laxity on the part of the police.
