Theres a guy I know, a real-life friend, but no longer a Facebook friend. Actually, he is still a Facebook friend because he has two accounts and only blocked me on one. Anyway, he accused me of preaching to him. I was asking him a series of hypothetical questions and telling him my views as a counterpoint to his views. I stand by my belief that I was not preaching. I may have been being a dickhead, but what else is new? When your nickname is Prickly Pear, I must ask, seriously, what did you expect? OK so, its my view that if you are going to post something about philosophy or religion or non-religion, you should know that people might try to poke holes in it. He posted a video that made some assumptions about how religious people believe in God because they need something to believe in and that religious people tend to think that nonreligious people, because they dont believe in God, dont have anything to believe in. First and foremost, I was trying to poke holes in the logic of those two points that were presented on that video. I also suggested that it is possible (not a known fact, of course) that you could be humanist and not know that God was the one who invented humanism. Possible. Not the only way. Point/counterpoint. Dialogue. Well, it was his FB page, so he took offense that I got so pointed on his page and said he did not want to discuss it (he claims he wrote that he did not want to discuss it here as in his page, but the word here was not there). He used terms such as illogical (no) and incessant (yes) and bullshit (depends on your outlook). He also said he posted the video for his friends that have the same outlook on this subject. I still dont know how you reach only the friends who think like you. And how do you know which friends think like you on a certain subject? I said that I disagreed with most of that feedback. Haha, this is one of those he said, she said disagreements, isnt it? Thats what He and She said, a joke, but keeping it gender equal, right? Digression. He said it was in the best interest of our real friendship that he blocked me. Well. OK then. He stated/insinuated that I was trying to tell him how to think and that I was trying to tell him that God was the only way. That could NOT be further from the truth. If theres one thing Im not its someone who would force anyone else how to think. Everyone is free to think however they want. I might have a hammer and try to voice certain viewpoints on FB incessantly (yes), but an individual is always free to choose how he thinks. That same night, I posted something on my own status that REALLY WAS preaching, writing, Jesus died for our sins and he is our salvation. I did it to point out the difference between a discussion, which I thought I was having with my friend, and real PREACHING. There is a difference, in my opinion. Am I upset? No. Irritated, yes, at a failure to communicate, no matter whose fault it is. Minor irritation. I will be seeing him in real life and at this point, I do not plan to discuss it with him. He might want to. But if I refuse, I will be real-life blocking. That is not my style. What style? Anyway, I know my friends will read this and support me. But I dont really need that because I know what my intentions were and those intentions did not include preaching or telling someone how to think. For all the support you give me, the same support could go to my friend from his friends if he chose to gripe about it. So, no, support is not what Im looking for. My main reason for posting this is to point out how communication can go wrong (especially on FB). Oh, and I do have one question, though, for the few people who made it this far. Should I tag him on his other FB account, like a Prickly Pear would, or should I forget just delete this post after a few readings by friends?
