Theres a presentation about Dengue Fever at A.H.F in the presentation room on 06-08-14, 9.00am. A notice has arrived, warning that any H.O who remains absent from the presentation will be terminated. The notice has come in the name of Dr. Hilal Dr. Uzair Dr. Raza Dr. Yagyesh Dr. Samia I received this text from a ward-mate. Laughter was my first response. Administration in this country, from hospitals to secretariats, revolves around just one thing: showmanship. Nobody gives a crap whether House Officers learn any skills in the major wards—skills which make them real doctors, who can actually practice independently at the end of their trainings. But the administration always seems keen enough to liberally use threats of termination for things like Dengue Fever. Why? Because Dengue has become an important disease politically. The ass-wipes all over the Punjab sitting on administrative posts in the hospitals consider it a personal obligation to their daddies in power (presently Ganja-League) to put up a huge show about how healthcare specialists are fighting their asses off to contain Dengue Fever. This effort of hospitals would show the public how well Ganjas are controlling Dengue, which will score political points for Ganjas, which in turn makes it a good opportunity for hospital administrations for kissing asses lying higher up in the corridors of power. A general survey of wards even by a layman would reveal Hepatitis C, Diabetes, Hypertension etc as the diseases needing highest attention in terms of resources. But no, we will just devote ourselves to friggin Dengue Fever which has no treatment even if someone contracts it, except symptomatic management (or rarely platelet transfusion for severe cases). A doctor cant do much for those who are already bitten by a mosquito, why, then, waste energy, time and resources of hospitals over it? Instead of focusing on prevention (which is a community task, not hospital staffs job) we are making a joke of our own healthcare system. Lets see where this showmanship takes us in the long run.
