Theres a stretch of tar ahead of me. I have been destined to walk it for I carry on me high denominations of the naira note. Loreena Mckennitts Santiago plays in my ears. Thats my company for the walk down this road. This journey breaks me, it evokes memories. I remember one as the song takes a salsa beat. 2007. University of Ibadan. Its almost 8:30pm. Darkness has fallen, we trudge the walkway. Young lovers hold hands, taking quiet steps together as though joined by Superglue. Lovers giggle and bump their heads into one another. Usually, the girls were vertically challenged; the guys towered above em. I am with my lover on this walk. I am taller and our paces are quiet and measured. No clumsiness or bumping of heads into each other. We simply hold each others hands and walk. I am getting bored, I want to hold her by the waist just like the other lovers do. My arms around her waist and she stares at me. You know that born again look from those church sisters who dont wear trousers nor use attachments on their hair, right? The look reset my swooning head. What are you trying to do? she asks with the same passion she teaches with during Sunday school. Oh I didnt mention that before. She was a Sunday school teacher. nothing. I answer, withdrawing my hand. Obviously, this love of ours shall know no romance. We walk the length of the road and as we return, it gets windy and it begins to rain. We run into a car park. Just us. Does the nose collide when people kiss? she asks. I dont know, I answer honestly. She stands before me, her chin slightly raised. There was a longing. I guess that was my cue to make a move. I just gawked. She texted later that night and said I lacked initiative. Women! Why are you people like this sef?! *sneaks out*
