Theres an aspect of this very complex issue that hasnt been discussed much, that being how the demographics of the fast food work force has changed over the past few decades. Whereas 20 years ago the average burger-flipper was a pimply faced teen, today thats not the case. Changes in immigration policy & enforcement (and a sense of entitlement by our nations youth) have created a labor market where these workers are largely 1st generation Americans, in their 30s and supporting families. All sides acknowledge that something has to give on these matters, but we need to consider that this role was never intended for workers supporting households and families. Technology and consumers desire for reasonable fast-food prices play into this debate as well. Proponents of arbitrary minimum wage hikes should consider these factors and lawmakers need to consider this debate as we craft immigration reform. Im not purporting to have the answers on this, just opening up an aspect of the debate Ive yet to see either side speak to as of yet.
