Theres an old saying that is used to describe information or a conversation that is so steeped in an industry as to be too complex or uninteresting to those outside of said industry. Coincidentally, that metaphor refers to another major league sports, inside baseball. This movie is inside football. One whole picture devoted to one day where the Cleveland Browns GM must navigate the NFL Draft while dealing with a pompous owner, overhyped coach, a quarterback coming off an injury, his fathers recent passing, a crazy family, and an office romance. Sports movies are at their best when they get the audience involved in the emotion of competition, losses, wins, perseverance, team work, etc. This movie, being inside baseball, doesnt have much of any of that. Its hard to connect emotionally with any of the characters. Most of them are self absorbed asses. The romance is there for some sort of emotional resonance, but watching Costner sneaking around with Jennifer Garner is more creepy than endearing. It was entertaining to some degree, I wouldve spent more time with the young athletes to get the audience more attached to their personal lives so you feel the risk of not getting drafted or drafted so far down the list your pay is greatly reduced. They used graphics and composting tricks to mimic Sports TV production, trying to spice up the story, which works a little. Im surprised Reitman took on this movie. Its not in his wheelhouse. Maybe that was the challenge.
