Theres been a bit of speculation this week about who will direct Ant-Man after Edgar Wright dropped out. Various names have been thrown about with Adam McKay even seeming to be the one finally on board...until he declined. Well, thinking about it, here are my top five picks to direct Ant-Man in this strange world we live in where Wright is not directing it, for some reason. 5. Greg Motolla Sometimes you have to go with the unexpected choice. Hes mainly known for directing character-based comedies like Superbad and Adventureland. Quite a number of Marvel directors are known for making smaller films, including but not limited to Jon Favreau and Marc Webb. Incidentally, he directed Paul a Simon Pegg-written comedy not directed by Wright. I think hes a talented director and he has the chops to do it. 4. Andrew Stanton Yes, hes directing Finding Dory at the moment, set for release in 2016. However, working in animation has that advantage of learning how to do multiple tasks at once. John Carter showed he can direct a live-action film and regardless of its current public perception, I do think that movie is going to be re-evaluated in ten years time and seen as a a great piece of pulp serial adventure cinema. So, who better to direct Ant-Man than the man who finally brought John Carter of Mars to the big screen? 3. Joseph Kosinski Regardless of their mixed reception, I really dug Tron: Legacy and Oblivion. They were visually stunning pieces of work that made their outlandish worlds believable and even under all of the tech and sparkle, there were still genuine human people underneath. I would hate to delay Tron 3 even further, but just imagining an Ant-Man with his style and a cool electronic musical score...well, who wouldnt want to see that? 2. Joe Dante He hasnt directed a big-budget movie in a while, but if Gremlins and Piranha are any indication, he can take any silly concept and make them work as strong movies while still embracing that silliness. Its kind of a surprise he hasnt directed a superhero movie before, because his sensibilities would fit a comic book adaptation. If they can hire a Troma veteran for Guardians of the Galaxy, why not a Roger Corman graduate for Ant-Man? 1. Chris Wedge I know. Not the most expected choice. However, if Epic is any indication, hes got a keen visual eye and a great love for characters of any size. He has this amazing ability at creating entire worlds from scratch, whether its the multi-layered and mythological forest in Epic or the mechanical metropolis, both over and underground, in Robots. Hes a smart filmmaker who knows how and when to utilise humour, but when it comes to action, he can be exciting and suspenseful. Watching any of his movies, its not hard to see the love he has for the material. And if he can give an animated movie the same size and scope as a Star Wars or a Lord of the Rings, imagine what he can do when given a big-budget superhero movie to play with.
