Theres something Ive maybe learnt from why Jeff Wall works better than Richard Prince and Paul Auster than David Foster Wallace. Also why Nicola Barker is one of the best practitioners of maximalism and Harrison Solows use of reference in Felicity and Barbara Pym is apt while Haruki Murakami labours to shoehorn Kafka into everything; so beyond The Wind-up Bird Chronicle it can get quite painful. If artists and writers are going to work their way through the limits of PoMo they need to start exploring the aesthetics of the Renaissance qua transitional insofar as it overlaps with PoMo: reference, revenge, irony, meta. Thats a condensed way of saying, were still working through the same damn problems as beset Shakespeare, Cervantes, More, Montaigne, Marlowe, Machiavelli, et al. (not timeless, just of our time), so let us own those problems. Kinda provisional thinking though, Im not well read enough to say any of this with confidence.
