There’s a saying in business so old, it’s in Latin: “Caveat emptor: Let the buyer beware.” It means to think hard before you hand over your money. Well, maybe we need a political version: “Let the donor beware.” Both parties are already trying to build up their war chests for next year’s elections. And while it’s smart to start fundraising early these days, some of the appeals are already sounding desperate. The next time you get a political email or letter asking for money, read it closely. Does it say anything positive about the candidate or party? Or does it just try to scare you with what monsters the other guys are? Before you reward political operatives for fanning hatred and divisiveness, ask yourself: are their accusations about the other guys even remotely true?
