There’s been a lot of reaction to our story on homeopathy and vaccines. Some of it has been critical of our use of hidden cameras to document the advice some homeopaths are giving parents with babies due for the shots. Filming anyone without their knowledge or consent is something we take very seriously and undertake with the greatest of care when it’s the only option. So why did we do it? Vaccination rates are falling in some communities in North America and we’re seeing a lot of preventable diseases we’d beat into retreat like whooping cough and measles make a comeback. When Marketplace began to investigate vaccine trends and falling vaccination rates, we learned that many parents who visit alternative health care providers are being discouraged from immunization. We learned one group of practitioners - homeopaths - was offering parents vaccine alternatives they advertise as over 90 percent effective.
