These Chickens Do Double Duty Raised Without Antibiotics, Chickens Provide Healthy Meat and Tout the Health Benefits of Oregano Now this is a trend I can get behind! According to an article in The New York Times, a chicken farm in Fredricksburg, PA, has stopped using antibiotics and switched to oregano, long lauded for its antibacterial properties, to keep its animals healthy. I love this story on two levels. First, its great to see meat producers committed to keeping animals free of antibiotics. Antibiotics in meat are a major cause of drug-resistant bacteria; one New England Journal of Medicine study found that 20 percent of store-bought meat was contaminated with salmonella, and of that, 84 percent was resistant to at least one form of antibiotic. Thats a staggeringly high percentage of meat tainted with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Further, antibiotics in meat can damage healthy gut flora, leading to digestive issues and other serious health problems. Many countries in the EU and Canada have outlawed sub-therapeutic antibiotic use in meat animals, but until the United States follows suit, well need to monitor our own consumption and make sure the meat we eat is antibiotic-free. In addition, Im always glad to see the benefits of natural medicine used in new and exciting ways. I have long recommended oil of oregano for its immune-boosting properties, but this is an amazing example of large-scale use with excellent results. Scott Sechler, the owner of the chicken farm, reports success with his new antibiotic-free system, and credits oregano with the outcome. Be Healthy! signature Dina Khader, MS, RD, CDN, MIFHI
