These are some pictures from my life three years ago. Today I am exactly three years disease free and once again it is the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While I am grateful for where I am, I have experienced a great deal of collateral damage. We are so focused on the physical diagnosis of those afflicted with cancer, that we forget about the person that is attached to the diagnosis. I have done a lot of reflecting, and breast cancer awareness month still embitters me every year, but why? Because there is a lack of activism. Because it has become a misguided corporate thing. It is not sincere. It is not about empowering. We overlook the collateral damages cancer patients experience to focus on making it fun and silly, and its not fun. People lose income, jobs, spouses, self, mental health, security, friendships...I can go on and on...even if we are all survivors. That, makes me angry. It makes me angry because we can do better. We can taken care of ourselves and others instead of laughing about how everything can give us cancer. Thats not a good enough answer. I dont have my answer, my cancer has a 1 in two million odds of occurring with NO solution. I made my own treatment plan. That is not okay. If we are going to tout support, make sure you are supporting, not pink washing. I hate the color pink. I hate fight like a girl. I dont need a color, I dont need a fight- I need answers. I want to know why. If you donate your time and money for a cause- do your research. Make sure your time and money is going where it can do the most good. Go to your doctors appointments. If what you are told doesnt sit right, go somewhere else. Educate. Advocate. We CAN do better. Lets be Nike.
