These beautiful ancient buildings, turned into neglected ruins, are scattered in various parts of Italy. Today, we look at these monuments with immense sadness thinking that they partake in the boundless league of ruins spreading all over Europe, from Russia to Portugal, passing through Poland, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, England, Scotland, Ireland, etc. All these wonderful buildings, falling apart under the general indifference, have acquired, in these tragic days, an even more sinister meaning. The fact that we are neglecting so many treasures comes from our incapacity in understanding, therefore in sharing (amongst us and with others) the founding principles and values of our culture, forgetting that the protection of people is not just a matter of guns, but it starts with the protection of the built environment that shaped them.
