These caught my interest during our visit last month to the Smithsonian Museum of Air & Space in Washington, D.C. because my grandparents owned the travel agency in Athol during my childhood. They opened in the 1950s and my grandmother sold the business after my grandfathers death in 1981. Many times I sat on the floor as as child, poring over travel brochures and dreaming of visiting exotic places. In later years, I worked there part time. Back then, you had to go through a travel agency to book a flight and we had to call each airline independently to obtain information about available flights available and pricing. You made a hold reservation and called the next airline. Afterward, you cancelled all of the holds except the one that the customer had chosen. Ticketing was performed by a special machine punching a series of perforated holes in a heavy paper about the thickness of cereal box paper. We booked all of the Kontro executives flights. They were a frequent customer. The role of a travel agent has certainly changed since those days. Many people nowadays have never used the services of a travel agent.
