These guys rock :) .The MRU is currently preparing equipment and resources to respond to protect marine life in South West waters from these barbaric drumlines.............................................................................................................Marine Response Unit 33 minutes ago Marine Response Unit Media Release – Saturday, 25 January 2014 Marine Response Unit condemns the actions of Barnett government in setting drum-lines off our SW coast. The MRU absolutely condemn the actions of the Barnett government and the commercial fisheries companies involved in the setting of drum-lines in SW waters in an attempt to cull large sharks from 3 species, particularly the Great White. The method has been condemned by marine scientists and also the Humane Society International as cruel and unnecessary and has not been proven to be effective in protecting the public. It is also highly questionable considering that up to 80% of marine animals caught on such drum-lines are NOT the target shark species but are considered to be mere by-catch who will nevertheless suffer from a cruel and inhumane death on the large hooks. The MRU would also like to remind the public that Bottlenose Dolphins who are much loved by the WA public and tourists in WA, inhabit the waters off WAs South West coastline and are at risk of being caught as by-catch on these drum-lines. One of the target species, the Great White, are protected both under the EPBC Act (in commonwealth waters) and in Western Australian state waters. They were protected because long term catches of white sharks showed declines and there is currently no scientific evidence showing that populations have recovered. The increase of shark attacks (including those by white sharks) over the last century, are related to human behaviour and not an increase in shark numbers. Increases are very likely a result of human population growth, increased communication of attacks, and more people using the ocean for recreational activities. The MRU is currently preparing equipment and resources to respond to protect marine life in South West waters from these barbaric drum-lines. MRU Media Contact Amy Flee 0406 173 421
