These photos bring back great memories… Firstly, I would like to congratulate John Carver on becoming ‘Head Coach’ at Newcastle United F.C, although it would appear to be to the end of the season. Irrespective, for any local lad, this is a great achievement. I remember the time and encouragement Shaun and I received from John in the early years and he allowed us both access to training with Sir Bobby Robson at Chester-Le-Street. John came up to Amble to run a Trident Soccer session at Coquet High School which was fantastic for everyone involved. All in all, good luck John and we wish you every success. We recently re-discovered this coaching manual and it’s great to recollect those great times. Most weeks were spent attending coaching sessions in Northumberland and observing training at Newcastle United and Middlesbrough F.C. We were very lucky to have access to Sir Bobby Robson, John Carver and Mick Wadsworth at Newcastle United, as well as England manager Sven Goran Errikson. However…to observe Terry Venables and Bryan Robson at Middlesborough was also profound. All of these managers and coaches knew their ‘craft’ and what set Terry Venables apart was his ability to interact with players, be positive and relate with them. All these ‘Master Craftsmen’ left an immense impression. Three England Managers all ’Kept it simple’, ‘had fun’ and always open to new ideas. We don’t need to ‘re-invent the wheel’ or the ball for that matter. Good luck for the remainder of the season to John and his coaching team at Newcastle United.
