These prizes may increase the glamor of math , and theres nothing wrong in giving money to some of the most beautiful minds(hoping that theyll use some portion of the prize money to give shapes to their dream projects of helping mathematical/scientific community ,like Terence Tao wants to help set up open-access mathematics journals, which would be available free to anyone, or for large-scale collaborative online efforts to solve important problems) but this british mathematician is making a valid point when he says : I dont know if they [these prizes] do much to encourage people to do mathematics, or to do any better mathematics than they do already. If you want to put money into maths to make a difference, spend it in the developing world. Spend it on scholarships for students in Africa, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, where there are real challenges.#breakthroughprize nytimes/2014/06/23/us/the-multimillion-dollar-minds-of-5-mathematical-masters.html?_r=0
