These students are here in solidarity with BlackLivesMatterBrandeis and black lives everywhere to express how public opinion and institutional perceptions of race have impacted their lives at Brandeis and in other spaces. #MyRaceCardBuysMe is a direct response to those who claim that these issues faced are not racially motivated and that race is evoked as an excuse (i.e. “they’re just playing the race card”). As people navigate different stages and spaces of their lives, many are faced with a lack of understanding, awareness or regard for the experiences and lives impacted by racism. The expression of this disregard may be nuanced or overt, but the various systematic, institutional and interpersonal forms it takes perpetuates racial and class oppression and divide, and too often culminates in loss of life. The general Black Lives Matter movement is part of a voice that says we shall not be silenced or ignored. Black Lives Matter Brandeis seeks to be part of the expression, protest and pressure for change that will increase awareness of the harms of systemic racism, and inspire others to agitate for meaningful societal change. It is in light of this and the backlash that many have faced for their expressions of self in these tumultuous times that the #MyRaceCardBuysMe campaign has emerged. Please join us in fight.
