These thoughts on stability leads to the following two of the four cornerstones of the US Africa Command: one, “support humanitarian and disaster relief” such as the Ebola epidemic; and, two, “prevent conflicts by working with African militaries to address security concerns and increase stability in the region“. The humanitarian aspect is being met, so what is AFRICOM’s response to the fearful signs of potential instability in Liberia? For as our political leaders keep worrying about stability, Ebola wouldn’t have the total commitment it deserves, and the probability of the virus widely transcending the region to the US and other countries escalates. In addition, pervasive concerns about stability relocate funding from critical social programs for the neediest communities to the security sector in order for our men and women in uniform to be ready and vigilant. Liberia deserves a regional AfRICOM HQ, and Uncle Sam can’t use the excuse of capability. We’ve paid the dues of a dutiful nephew. For example, the US naval genius Commodore Matthew C. Perry cut his teeth here between 1819 and 1821; FDR came in the 1940’s to erect a jump off platform; US wishes were willingly our foreign policy; Firestone, Bethlehem Steel, Goodrich, etc. made their kills; uncle, blood ought to be thicker than water.
