These two images are from a recent series of portraits that I have been putting on large decorative platters. The platter measures 17 x 11 and is made with terra cotta that was bisque fired to cone 04 and then glaze fired to cone 05. To produce the series I have been using an ancient edition of Adobe Illustrator to draw the images and design the lettering. These files are then imported into the surprisingly simple to use software that came with my Silhouette Cameo that I use to cut the stencils. For this project, the stencils I am using are made from an adhesive-backed vinyl. Once the stencils are applied I sandblast the surface of the platter so as to etch the image into the already fired clay. After cleaning the platter and repairing the now-tattered stencils, I used underglazes and clear glaze to finish the piece. You can see more from this series as I will be posting images at facebook/davidtoddtrostceramicart
