These two maps of the Village of Seneca Falls, NY show the land - TopicsExpress

These two maps of the Village of Seneca Falls, NY show the land owned by the Stanton family at 32 Washington Street. The first map was done in 1852 and the second in 1856, during the familys time residing in Seneca Falls, NY. Both maps named H.B. Stanton (Elizabeths husband Henry Brewster Stanton) as the owner of the property, but that was incorrect. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was the sole owner of the the familys home and land in Seneca Falls. Elizabeths father, Daniel Cady, deeded the property to Elizabeth, not Henry, on June 22, 1847. Even after the passage of New Yorks Married Womens Property Act in 1848, it was so unusual for a married woman to own property separate from her husband that map makers and tax assessors continued to list Henry Stanton on their documents despite the fact that Elizabeth was the true owner.
