These two older photos show the steps taken to protect the piers at Fort Adams in the 70s. The orange cylinders were a temp breakwater designed by a group of URI professors and removed some time after the boat show that is pictured. The tire breakwater (black) is a bit to the left (north) and was unfortunately left to sink. Lore has it that this temporary breakwater was abandoned and it slowly sank in the late 70s. The large object that looks like a pier is a barge also brought in to protect the piers from strong northerlies. With the help of Larry Ahearn and his team at Reagan Construction, 850 of the projected 1500 tires were successfully removed today and will be shredded to re use as playground surfaces, road surfaces and other good uses! Amazing. Glad we have the ability to get these out of the harbor! Brad Read.
