The definers want the power to name. And the defined are now taking that power away from them.” Indeed, the power to define has long been weaponized against indigenous groups, to the point that most names they’re currently referred to derive from European nomenclature or designations given by their tribal enemies. In this light, the maps above and the constant cultural battles seem part of a larger – and frankly, centuries old – effort to preserve basic autonomy and the right to self-identification in the face of constant assault.
