They say write about what you know. As I sit here doing just that, it takes me back to dark places in my life - places that heavy my heart. Im writing a scene of abuse right now and though the abuse is different than that suffered by myself, Im finding myself likening the two events together. The scenes that Im writing now are a story of empowerment, the story of a battered woman overcoming the fear of her husband and striking out on into the world alongside her friends. Myself... I was abused at a young age by a mother I barely knew and girlfriends of my Dads that he never meant to happen. She hurt me for reasons Ill never fully know. Likely it couldve been severe post-partum on Moms part. Whatever the reason Im not a fan of my mom. A lot of you whove spoken to me more than once know that. Well, thats the reason. I remember a pillow being held over my face and Dad coming in to knock it away. Its just a brief fragment of a memory but one nonetheless. The shards are all I have as as I piece this scene together the fear and anger and confusion and love and all the emotions that I felt even at my very young age flow out of me now as I pen the words. Women are not tools to be used and discarded. Wives moreso than anything. They are human beings just like me and you and the woman next door. They have their moments when they push you to the edge but when you get to that edge, its what you do there that defines the type of person you are. Katie and I have been at dark places in our relationship and I had a lot of anger problems but Id never lay a hand on her or my son. Id lay my life down for either one of them, both if I could. Be respectful of all people too. Not just women. If someones disrespectful to you, kill them with kindness. Smile at them, tell them to be on their merry, and just go on yours. Like Joss Whedon said in his speech at Equality Now (paraphrased). To all of you, I say, we will never be not fighting. And to all of you on that other side, the genderist (and racist and other forms of discrimination) WE will never be NOT fighting. Not as long as theres hate. Thank you. #equalitynow
