They say you learn something new everyday. Today, I learned that - TopicsExpress

They say you learn something new everyday. Today, I learned that some processed meat and cheese contains pennicilin. If youd like to find out how I learned this lesson, read on. We had Jersey Mikes for lunch. I ordered a kids salami sandwich for C because it was something a little different than her usual. She had a few bites, but didnt come close to finishing it. Then we went to Ns show. When we got there, C complained of being itchy. This is not new, so I just held her. It got worse and worse, so halfway through the show I took her to the bathroom to look. She was covered head to toe in hives and scratching them raw. The only thing we know shes allergic to is pennicilin, but I got home and googled allergies to salami (since this is the only unusual thing she had eaten). Shes so allergic to pennicilin that the doc had warned us never to try exposing her to it again because there was a risk of worsening allergy or anaphylaxis. Online, I found several articles explaining pennicilin being added to aged meats and cheese or being present naturally as part of the curing process. Several processors had this in their FAQ section, listed as a feature of their product! How did I not know this? And she frequently has slight hives or rashes which we always assumed were related to sensitive skin. And she doesnt like eating meat. We have joked that shed probably rather be a veggiesaurus. Oh, brother. Shes probably always been reacting to this and we just never knew about it. Crap! Life just got a little more complicated.
