Things About Dogs...... I cannot remember a time when I did not have a dog. We have two dogs in our home now and although some days it is a challenge, we love them and wouldnt trade them for anything. Our big dog, Daisy, is a twelve year old, 60 lb pit bull. A lot of people will read this and think we own a monster. Those people can feel free to skip this post, but I will also say that you have never loved or been loved by a pibble, so you might learn something by reading this. I have had many dogs and I have been around hundreds of dogs in my life. I have been bitten several times. Never by a pit. We also have a seven year old, 35 lb basset hound named Sage. She is very sweet. And very mouthy. These are just a few of the observations I have made through the years. #1. The dogs run the house. We just pay the mortgage. #2. We have a sign that hangs by the the door that says Agenda for the day: Let the dogs out, let the dogs in. Yep. Everyday. All day. #3. I wish they could talk. Life would be so much simpler if I knew what they wanted. #4. You do without to keep them healthy. Daisy has Cushings Syndrome. Its basically like roid rage. She has always been fine with people, but occasionally snaps on her little sister. Her meds are $150 per month. Thats okay. Peace in the household is priceless. New cars and clothes are not as snuggly as she is. #5. You have to spell r-i-d-e or they drive you crazy. If we say it around Daisy she runs to the car and jumps up and down. She happily sits in the front seat. If its occupied she rides in that persons lap. #6. A lot of words sound alike to a dog. Meet sounds like eat and treat. The word home, used in any context, sends them to the doors and windows barking. Santa Claus sounds like Frosty Paws. Yes, we buy doggie ice cream. Dont judge! #7. If there is mud, they will roll in it. Double for smelly stuff. #8. Babies are babies to dogs. Sage used to nest occasionally, even though she is fixed. One day when she was going through this, we heard our son outside yelling at her. She was coming up the stairs, very carefully bringing us a baby armadillo. The little one was returned safely to its mama. Things could have been exciting if she had made it in the house. I had a dog one time that fostered a piglet I found. She nursed it right along with her puppies. #9. Im glad that Jim and I have a king size bed so we have room for the dogs. Even with just Daisy, we share our half while shes comfy on her half. And to get up during the night is to risk losing even more bed space. #10. Trash is like a treasure trove to dogs. Theres stuff to eat: Why did my people throw out this perfectly tasty moldy, smelly goodie. Stuff to roll on. Stuff to scatter: The last cracker crumbs in the box make a heck of a mess. Stuff to shred. As a puppy Daisy removed every page, almost individually, from a phone book. (For you younger folk, phone books are how we used to find each other before the internet.) Oh no, it was not the little thin phone book. We didnt know whether to laugh or cry. You couldnt see the carpet in the living room. #11. They dont make piddle pads long enough for bassets. Sage does not have the bladder capacity that Daisy does. We put two piddle pads end-to-end for her and she does pretty good though. #12. Dog snuggles fix everything. After a rough night at work they are more than ready to go to bed with me. If youre sick they lay nearby and keep an eye on you. If something hurts, like my knee, they come and sniff it, then give it a quick kiss. When Heather was having seizures, Daisy would go to her immediately before it happened and then lay by her head until she was better. They know. I could write about our pups forever. They are a part of our family. They love unconditionally. They dont judge. I hope youve all been fortunate to have a pet in your life, whatever it might be. Yes, even a cat. As Im writing this, Daisy is snuggled on the chair with me. She loves to be close. Or possibly she really just wants the whole chair to herself.
