Things I Love About Hares & Hyenas #8: Drag Slam, Collaborations and Steve Smart in Drag. Drag Slam was an event, produced by Melbourne Spoken Word (and Benjamin Solah), that Hares Hyenas hosted in the not-so-distant past. I was going to save this event for later in my series of memories, however Lucille Schnierer posted her documentary yesterday, so I thought now was the moment. Lucille and her very talented crew of filmmakers shot a 15 min documentary about the whole process of Drag Slam. Steve Smart and I feature heavily in it, though it should stand to say that there were many fabulous performers, all who nailed it. Fury Jongleurs Sue Pository character was hilarious. Quinny Quinn was so manly I got butch anxiety and had Nik Dimopoulos shave my head in the garage 10 mins before hitting the stage because they had out-butched me (but lets face it, Im not really that butch - Im more alien appropriating human). Morganics imagined a pirate-wench so badass that the Goodship Venus herself would have mutinied, and will do so out of the sheer love if they ever see that footage (which sadly, didnt make the final cut). Nicolette Octavia made her stunning debut (welcome, Nicolette!). And many more. I love that this time, when I put a cock on my head and hit the stage, they loved it. Twice. And then someone even recorded it for proctology. Ahem. Posterity. For anyone who missed this TOTALLY sold out event, here is 15 minutes of really well collected footage about it. So thank you Ben for having this wild idea and bringing it to us. Any others you have will be swiftly and enthusiastically put on stage. As you know, Hares & Hyenas are running a pozible campaign to soundproof the venue. This is imperative to the survival of the space, and without it, we could not have events like Drag Slam.
