Things are coming together nicely for the Walsall Arts Fest 2014. Two award winning filmmakers Mark O’Halloran and Deborah Haywood are confirmed for Q&A on 28 June. Organizer Carolyn Bayliss likes the way that Mark and Deborah’s work leave so many questions unanswered, “to me that is what art is, something for the viewer to mull over”, she said. The Free Art Friday started by My Dog Sighs (Urban Artist of the Year 2013 at Upfest, Bristol’s leading street art event), Los Dave and M-One Art was the basis for the Park Bench Art events which start on 8th and 15th March at the Walsall Arboretum. “Instead of leaving the art work on the street, I wanted to hand it to people” Carolyn adds. Anyone interested should find the Walsall Arts Fest Facebook page or look at shrewdmove.net for more details of the artists involved. They include Laurent Fievre whose images are skeletal and dry, they could be embryonic or mutant and these sit well with the sinister work of Deeds which evokes a recollection of Clockwork Orange, crew and gangs and a sinister crime which shocked the nation. If you are looking for something different, look no further than the diverse work of Mos Shaw (These Things that Visit). Known for his layering technique on canvas as well as creating art work out of vinyl and tiny mechanisms found in watches, this Teignmouth artist is well known on the urban art scene and can be found at Alfresco in Blackpool this year for the second time. Mos is one third of Arts Anonymous along with Nme and Johnman who is exhibiting in London with his touching work on train tickets. The Park Bench Art events are organic and will include work that is sent from artists around the country including Bristol based Ann Tagonist whose Love Birds have flown as far as Australia. The list of impressive artists involved goes on to include JPS who did an amazing 10 ft piece at the beginning of the year, Korp whose little socialist worms are a mix of conformity, deviance and cuteness. There is the amazing work of 3 Pen Problem and Dice 67 who is behind Free Art Cheltenham has also sent stuff. There’s been great support from businesses who have bought advertisement space on the back of flyers for £10. You can find anything from local retailers LPs Paradise, Hand of Time and Life of Dad in the Victorian Arcade, all offering discounts. Award winning electrician A C Electrical and the Shahi Grill, Shimla Peppers and the 3 Kings Buffet Restaurant are all offering discounts and if you are looking for something really special get in touch with Chef 4 U. There’s a company called UKfilmlocation looking for properties for filmmakers too supporting the fest. Details can be found on the back of flyers distributed around Walsall and being put on Facebook and emailed around businesses. If you need to know anything else, come along to one of the events and have a chat. 5th March 2014
